Spain Expands Border Lanes to Ease Melilla-Morocco Traffic Congestion

The Spanish government has opened more lanes at the Melilla border with Morocco to improve the fluidity of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, after monstrous traffic jams recorded on both sides of the border during the Christmas holidays.
The number of operational lanes at the border was insufficient to meet the high demand, which is why new lanes have been opened for vehicle traffic, said Sabrina Moh, the government delegate in Melilla, at a press conference.
Regarding pedestrian traffic, a number of lanes will also be opened depending on the influx, said Moh, who also notes a speed in document control on the Spanish side.
The Spanish government has asked the Moroccan authorities to also open more lanes on the Moroccan side of the border in order to facilitate the passage of travelers in both directions, the delegate added.
Morocco has expressed its commitment to accelerate border traffic during the meeting held by the governor of Nador with residents of Melilla who demonstrated in front of his office on December 26, she recalled.
