Spain Enhances Border Security in Melilla with €2.5 Million Surveillance System

The Civil Guard will proceed with the installation of a new surveillance system on the land, air and maritime borders of Melilla with Morocco, in order to strengthen control and surveillance and thus prevent attempts by migrants to storm the borders. A budget of 2.5 million euros, all taxes included, has been planned for this project.

The new surveillance system consists of the installation of five fixed stations (EFV) in different parts of the autonomous city. It will be connected to a command post located in the service operations center (COS) of the Melilla command and will allow the detection, recognition and identification of targets day and night, even in difficult weather conditions.

To this end, each station will have a modular and orientable sensor, a thermal camera (refrigerated type), a daytime (color) camera, a laser rangefinder and a visible laser illuminator (designator). The stations will also be equipped with a rack-type cabinet with an individual monitor, a computer, a digital video recorder, a keyboard and a joystick. In short, a control tower with access to all the functions of the observation and surveillance system.

This type of system "is effective for the detection, control and tracking of migrants, day and night, and for ensuring effective border surveillance," explained the Armed Institute. The system should be operational within 5 months, according to Infodefensa which had access to the call for tenders issued in this context. The deadline for companies to submit their applications is set for June 27. The successful bidder will be announced on July 19, the same source specifies.
