Spain’s PP Demands Equal Trade Rules at Melilla-Morocco Border Crossing

Since the reopening of the Melilla border with Morocco, the Moroccan authorities are not allowing any products purchased in the autonomous city to enter, while the Spanish authorities are allowing travelers to cross the border with their goods. The Popular Party (PP) is considering denouncing this lack of reciprocity in parliament if nothing is done in the next few days to correct the situation.
The PP wants to ask Morocco to respect this reciprocity at the Melilla border so as not to further disadvantage local businesses. "If travelers enter Melilla from Morocco with large quantities of products per person, our merchants will be disadvantaged," explained deputy Daniel Conesa to El Faro de Melilla. And he added: "We are not calling for a return to smuggling, but are asking Morocco to have a regulated exchange under the traveler regime between the borders."

The PP deputy indicated that if no change is observed in the border crossing in the next few days, his parliamentary group will table a motion in the Assembly to ask the government to take the necessary measures to solve the problem of the tariff imposed by the post office for sending parcels to Melilla. A few months ago, the residents of the city had to pay nearly 5 euros to collect their parcel.
