Spain Aims to Repatriate Hundreds of Moroccan Minors from Ceuta by September

The government delegate in Ceuta, Salvadora Mateos, assured on Monday that the Spanish government is working to ensure that all Moroccan minors who entered en masse in May return to their families.

At least 800 minor migrants of whom about 200 are under 16 years old, continue to stay in the city of Ceuta since the end of the migration crisis in May. The Ministry of Education is studying the possible mechanisms to ensure their education from the start of the school year in September, Mateos said at a press conference.

These foreign minors are currently housed in makeshift camps and sports centers in Ceuta, she recalls, adding that the schooling of foreign minors requires prior language immersion, as these Moroccan children do not have a good command of the Spanish language. The Moroccan minors "must return to their parents... They will all leave and those whose parents do not want them will be taken care of by Moroccan entities," she said.

Mateos hopes that these returns will be effective before the next school year, counting on the "very good" relations with Morocco since the arrival of the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Manuel Albares. Since the end of the migration crisis, 3,474 migrants have voluntarily returned to Morocco and only 124 have been repatriated. 1,230 have applied for asylum, of which 260 have already been accepted.
