Soaring Argan Oil Prices Make Moroccan Staple a Global Luxury

Argan oil is seeing its price soar this year in Morocco. Once a common consumer product, it is becoming a luxury reserved for the wealthiest, a victim of its international success.
The growing demand, particularly in Europe and the United States, is driving prices up, making this emblematic product of Morocco’s heritage almost inaccessible to the less affluent.
Used for centuries for its cosmetic and food virtues, argan oil is now a key ingredient in many beauty and hair care products. This global popularity has caused its market value to explode, directly impacting prices on the local market. Ironically, Moroccans, who have always used this product, are now deprived of this natural resource.
Several factors explain this surge in prices. In addition to strong international demand, the drought affecting the argan-producing regions is contributing to the scarcity of this precious oil. Added to this is the impact of overgrazing: the herds of nomadic shepherds that weaken these trees and reduce their production. Finally, the role of foreign companies, which control a significant share of production and export the oil at exorbitant prices, is being pointed out.
