Saint-Gobain to Close Spanish Windshield Plant, Shift Production to Morocco

Saint-Gobain has announced the launch of negotiations with a view to ceasing the activity of its windshield plant in Avilés (Spain), which could lead to the elimination of 280 jobs and a move to Morocco.
The decision to close the plant, which currently employs 160 people directly and 120 indirectly, is motivated by several factors, including high production costs compared to other production sites in the Mediterranean region, particularly the Kénitra plant in Morocco.
According to the management of Saint-Gobain, the Kénitra plant offers competitive advantages in terms of production costs and wages. In addition, the plant is located near a rapidly expanding automotive production area.
The unions of the Avilés plant reacted angrily to the announcement of the closure, stating that the decision was "motivated by profit" and that the company had not given the employees the opportunity to save the plant.
Negotiations between management and unions should begin in the coming days. The objective is to reach an agreement on a redundancy plan and compensation for the workers.
