Saad Lamjarred Sentenced 5 Years Prison Rape Conviction

Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred has been found guilty of rape for acts committed in 2018. He is sentenced to five years in prison, without an arrest warrant, following a trial held in closed session.

The verdict came down on May 15. Prosecuted for the rape of a young woman he met in a nightclub in Saint-Tropez in August 2018, Saad Lamjarred is sentenced to five years in prison. However, the court did not order his immediate incarceration since he appeared as a free man. He must also pay 30,000 euros in damages and interest to the complainant, plus 5,000 euros for her legal costs.

The civil party’s lawyer, Me Dominique Lardans, expressed satisfaction with this outcome. He firmly recalled that "it is not by attacking the victim that one achieves an acquittal". On the defense side, Me Christian Saint-Palais declined to comment. Since the investigation opened, which had resulted in three months of provisional detention that same year, the accused has always denied the rape. He claimed the relationship in his hotel room was consensual, an argument rejected by the Aix-en-Provence court of appeal as early as 2021.

This new judgment is part of a heavy judicial history for the singer, against whom the prosecution initially demanded ten years in prison. Last year, the Paris assizes court sentenced him to six years in prison for another rape committed in 2016 in the capital, a sentence he has appealed.
