Record 3.2 Million Moroccan Expatriates Return Home in Summer Transit Operation

The Marhaba 2023 Operation ended on September 15 with a record traffic of 775,366 vehicles, an 11.5% increase compared to 2022. A figure never reached in 30 years of the Transit Operation.
This year, between June 15 and September 15, a total of 3,219,534 Moroccans residing abroad (MREs), an increase of 10.6% compared to last year, transited through the Spanish ports to return to Morocco thanks to 11,084 ship rotations (11.9% more than in 2023), according to data from the Directorate General of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior. The Operation took place without incident and without major incidents, reports Cadena Ser.
As in previous years, many MREs preferred the port of Algeciras, which absorbed 71% of the traffic, an increase of 4.5% compared to 2022. The port of Almería, for its part, absorbed 17.7% of the traffic, an increase of 12.7% compared to last year. In total, more than 34 ships operated rotations in the nine Spanish ports (Algeciras, Almería, Alicante, Ceuta, Málaga, Melilla, Motril, Tarifa and Valencia) as part of this operation.
