US Recognition Boosts Morocco's Position in Western Sahara Dispute

With the American recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, Morocco has a head start over Algeria, the main supporter of the Polisario Front. The French magazine Le Point indicates that the kingdom is diplomatically succeeding in scoring points against its neighbor, now under pressure.

In an article published on its website, the French magazine explains that Morocco, in the duel that opposes it to Algeria, has just won "an important diplomatic victory. This crowns a milestone and an attitude," it writes in an article titled "Morocco vs. Algeria: a duel at the top".

According to the author of the article, recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, an area rich in phosphates and fishery resources, is enough to anger Algiers, which certainly does not have the diplomatic resources to react to the pressure.

Since Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune was infected with Covid-19, Algeria has been experiencing a chaotic situation marked by "a contested governance in the street and a void at the top of the state". And the fact that all powers are concentrated in the hands of the Presidency of the Republic does not bode well for a positive evolution. "When Algiers is characterized by a recurring bad mood, constantly brandishes the hand of the foreigner, a permanent recourse to conspiracy, Rabat cultivates its good relations... The same with the Gulf countries," says the French weekly.
