Algerian Lobbies Challenge US Recognition of Morocco’s Western Sahara Claim

The Algerian lobbies in Washington have reacted to the American recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara.
Jeune Afrique devoted an article titled "Sahara: the counter-offensive of the Algerian lobbies in Washington" to the reaction of the Algerian lobbies in Washington. The magazine points out that American lobbyist David Keene was a far cry from imagining that after the renewal of the lobbying contract in May 2020 for a sum close to 30,000 euros per month, the United States would recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
The author of the article specifies that David Keene’s mission was to convince the Americans of the importance of Algeria, particularly in the field of defense, and to tarnish Morocco’s image. Unhappy with this decision, the lobbyist openly attacked US President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his main adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Henceforth, the relationship between the Republican and the outgoing president has deteriorated. He is thus following in the footsteps of his main ally in the Algerian file, former National Security Advisor John Bolton, close to David Keene and in conflict with Trump since he was fired in September 2019, explains Jeune Afrique. Even if John Bolton is not directly a lobbyist for Algeria, he has long supported the holding of a self-determination referendum and participated in the development of the James Baker II plan in 2003. This project provided for the establishment of a provisional autonomous authority.
In addition to the Sahara file, Mr. Keene is working to make the Algerian voice heard in the field of defense, the same media pointed out.
