Rabat Mayor Faces Dismissal Calls Over Nepotism Allegations in Legal Case

The PJD and FGD opposition councilors at the Rabat municipal council sent a request to the wali of the region on Friday to dismiss the mayor, Asmaa Rahlalou, who called on her husband as the municipality’s lawyer in a case before the courts.
The councilors of the two parties believe that the mayor of Rabat has violated the provisions of Article 65 of Organic Law 113-14 by calling on her husband, a lawyer, to defend the municipality in a case opposing the institution to the FGD councilor, Faroouk Mahdaoui, who contests his "dismissal" from the chairmanship of the cultural, sports and social affairs committee, before the administrative court of the city.

For Omar Al Hyani, the president of the FGD group of councilors, the mayor is in a conflict of interest for having requested the services of her husband, a lawyer, to defend the municipality, reports L’Économiste. "If the president of the council commits acts contrary to the laws in force, the governor of the prefecture or province or his deputy sends him a written request to provide written explanations on the acts attributed to him within a period of 10 days," he recalls, to justify the letter sent by the PJD and FGD councilors to the wali.

According to Article 64 of the aforementioned law, the governor or his deputy, after receiving or not receiving the written explanations within the set time limit, can refer the matter to the administrative court to request the dismissal of the president of the municipal council. For the moment, the mayor of Rabat has made no statement on the subject.
