Rabat Ice Rink 280 Million Dirhams Empty Stadium Morocco

The stands are ready, the ice is installed and the facilities were designed to host international matches. Yet Rabat’s new ice hockey stadium has remained almost unused since its inauguration on January 24, 2026.

On that day, the venue located in the Yacoub El Mansour district hosted a friendly match between the Moroccan and French national teams. A meeting intended to mark the official launch of the ice rink and showcase Morocco’s ambitions in a sport still very rarely practiced in the country.

Since then, no real competition schedule has been made public. According to Nichane, this inaugural match would even be the only meeting organized at the stadium since the end of construction.

This low activity contrasts sharply with the scale of the investment made. When the project was launched, its cost was estimated at 246 million dirhams. The final amount would now exceed 280 million dirhams.

An ice rink without a real schedule

The facility spans a total area of over 16,000 square meters, with an ice rink of approximately 1,700 square meters. Presented as one of the largest facilities of its kind in Africa, it was supposed to serve training for Moroccan clubs, the national championship and the organization of international competitions.

The Royal Moroccan Ice Hockey Federation also aimed to host foreign teams and open the sport to the general public. Before the inauguration, its officials assured that several countries had expressed interest in participating in future events in Morocco.

These announcements have not, for the moment, been followed by visible sporting activity. No regular championship or major international tournament appears to have taken place at the new ice rink. The lack of activity raises even more questions given that operating such a facility entails permanent expenses, particularly for maintaining the ice, ensuring air conditioning, maintaining the facilities and mobilizing technical staff.

Ice hockey remains a marginal sport in Morocco. The number of practitioners and clubs remains limited, making it difficult to regularly operate a venue of this size without a clearly defined development strategy.

The problem is therefore no longer simply whether it was relevant to build an Olympic ice rink in Rabat. It is now to know what program is planned to bring it to life and prevent an investment of several hundred million dirhams from remaining permanently without matches, without audiences and without real sporting purpose.
