Psychiatric Evaluation Underway for Moroccan Suspect in Spanish Church Attack

The Moroccan Yassin Kanja, author of the attack carried out on January 25 against Catholic priests in Algeciras (Cádiz), underwent a psychiatric examination before the scientific police of the Audiencia Nacional on Thursday. The 25-year-old man says he sees "demons".
The two forensic doctors tried to determine if the Moroccan was suffering from psychiatric disorders in order to establish his guilt. During this examination, which lasted about an hour, he confessed to having visions of demons, according to judicial sources who spoke to EFE. The forensic doctors consulted and analyzed Yassin’s medical history, which would have suffered from psychiatric disorders in Morocco.
They will give their opinion to the judge who, in light of the medico-legal report, will decide the fate of the accused who was awaiting deportation. The magistrate plans to question 17, 21 and 24 March, 19 witnesses including the priest Antonio Rodríguez, one of the four injured in this attack on the churches of San Isidro and La Palma.
The judge believes that the evidence gathered so far supports the fact that the Moroccan’s attack can be described as "jihadist" and is directed both against Catholic priests and against Muslims who, for the investigators, do not follow the precepts of the Quran.
For the moment, it seems that Kanjaa acted alone, as he himself acknowledged in his statement. At this stage of the investigation, the judge believes that the profile of the Moroccan corresponds to that of a "self-indoctrinated terrorist who acted alone, without a direct link to a terrorist organization".
