Polisario Front Rejects Moroccan King's Stance on Western Sahara Referendum

The Polisario Front reacted strongly on Thursday to King Mohammed VI’s speech on the Sahara. The King of Morocco had stated that the self-determination referendum for this territory remained an "inapplicable" option. In response, the Polisario Front accuses the Moroccan sovereign of wanting to sideline the will of the Sahrawi people and to mask a historical and legal reality.

"The Sahrawi government has confirmed that what is set out in the King of Morocco’s speech cannot distort the established historical and legal facts concerning the Sahrawi issue as a decolonization issue. [...] The exercise of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination cannot be confiscated under any circumstances," says a statement relayed by the SPS agency.

On the international scene, the Sahrawi leaders recall the persistent blockage of UN resolutions on the Sahara, attributed to Morocco. "The entire international community is witness to the obstruction, by the Moroccan occupation regime, of all the stages of the implementation of the UN African settlement plan," they said, insisting on the failure of Rabat’s "desperate attempts" to impose an alternative solution.

The independence movement has also not hidden its dissatisfaction with the recent Spanish and French support for the Moroccan autonomy project, which it perceives as a challenge to its cause. In the eyes of the Polisario Front, this position marks a break, and Spain, the administering power of Western Sahara from a legal point of view, remains a key player in this unresolved issue.
