Police Lawyer Disputes Circumstances of Teen's Death in Brussels Chase

Sven Mary, the lawyer for the police officers involved in the death of Adil in a chase in Anderlecht, gives his version of the facts and denounces, at the same time, the Brussels Secretary of State, Pascal Smet, who would be making "political exploitation".

"They [the police officers] saw the flashing lights of their colleagues while they were on board an unmarked Toyota Yaris without a flashing light or siren. They moved at a slow speed, around 20 km/h, towards the young man who was coming towards them. Between Adil and the police car, there was a Vito van. [...] Suddenly, the scooter emerged from behind the van and veered out of its lane after touching the van heading towards the police vehicle that it hit on the left side," explains the lawyer.

For Sven Mary, this brutal death is not the fault of the police. "The death of this young man is obviously tragic. But it’s also horrible to see how political exploitation has been made of it," he denounces. In a tweet, the Brussels Secretary of State, Pascal Smet, claimed that Adil was a nice young man but that he no longer had a future, not because of the coronavirus, but because of this check.

For the criminal lawyer, "the police officers did what the government asked them to do (enforce the lockdown). That’s why I have good advice for Mr. Smet: Shut up if you don’t know the file."

For now, Adil’s family, who have joined the civil party against X for involuntary manslaughter, and the lawyer for the two police officers, are awaiting the final complete report from the automotive expert, which will indicate the actual circumstances of this tragic accident.
