Ounahi’s Performance Scrutinized as Marseille Exits Champions League Qualifiers

The return match between Olympique de Marseille and Panathinaikos was a golden opportunity for OM players to show their best. OM, the unfortunate loser in the first leg (1-0), had a revenge to take. But after a fierce struggle, Marcelino’s team lost on penalties (2-1, 5-3 on penalties), thus missing the Champions League group stage.
Among the Marseille players who sparked much debate, Azzedine Ounahi was at the forefront. His performance was criticized by the specialized press.
La Provence (3/10) was rather critical of him, considering him as a brake on the momentum of his team, with a tendency to slow down the game with superfluous gestures. The daily newspaper, however, recalls an occasion where Ounahi could have scored a memorable goal.
Footmercato (5.5/10), on the other hand, was a little more lenient. Praising his altruistic play, the media recalled his good performance last weekend against Reims. It noted his pressing effort and his sense of positioning which could, on a few occasions, have offered opportunities to his teammates.
Cœurmarseillais (3/10) was not tender with the Moroccan, considering that he only slowed down the game every time he touched the ball.
Maxifoot (5/10) and 90min (4/10) both highlighted the gap between Ounahi’s commitment, irreproachable in his efforts, and his efficiency in the decisive zone. The former emphasizing his fight on all the balls and the latter recalling his attempt stopped by the opposing goalkeeper.
Le Phocéen (4/10) and Onefootball (4/10) were unanimous in saying that Ounahi was not up to par in this crucial match, with a disappointing performance despite some isolated flashes.
The majority of the sports press agrees that the Moroccan was unable to live up to expectations for this crucial match.
