Olympic Legend El Guerrouj Calls for Overhaul of Moroccan Athletics System

Hicham El Guerrouj, the Moroccan legend of athletics, said that participation in the Olympic Games requires rigorous long-term preparation and that one must hope to win Olympic medals after at least ten years of hard work.
In statements to the press from Paris where he is attending the Olympic Games, El Guerrouj indicated that one does not become an Olympic champion overnight and that achieving such a goal requires long-term preparation and support from the Ministry of Sports, the federation, the Olympic committee, the club, the league and the family.
This "ecosystem" is essential to have champions capable of winning Olympic medals, added El Guerrouj, calling on the authorities to change mentalities. The gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics also explained that preparation for the Olympic Games requires concentration, resources and commitment from the highest authorities.
When asked about his lack of involvement in the training of Moroccan athletes, El Guerrouj said he would get involved when the authorities change their mentalities, because, as he recalled, going to the Olympic Games is to represent an entire country, not just one person.
