Norwegian Star Jakob Ingebrigtsen Shatters 24-Year-Old 2,000m World Record

Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen has shattered the 2,000 meters world record held by Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj for 24 years.
The new benchmark time is now 4:43.13, erasing the old one by more than a second. This race was held at the Memorial Van Damme (Belgium), a Diamond League event, where the pacemakers Mounir Akbache, Boaz Kiprugut and Cornelius Tuwei led Ingebrigtsen to victory, allowing him to finish over thirty meters ahead of his competitors.
Entering the track very focused, Ingebrigtsen followed his pacemakers to the letter. When the time came to face the last five hundred meters alone, he accelerated, leaving his rivals far behind and crossing the finish line as a true sprint maestro. Green lights on the track’s edge indicated in real time that a record was being set.
This year, Ingebrigtsen’s record is impressive and promises more for the Diamond League final in Eugene, USA. In July, he had already beaten his own European record in the 1,500 meters in Poland. In Paris in June, he recorded the world’s best time in two miles. And let’s not forget his exploits at the recent World Championships in Budapest, where he won gold in the 5,000 meters and silver in the 1,500 meters.
