Jakob Ingebrigtsen Nears 1,500m World Record with Fourth-Fastest Time in History

Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the reigning Olympic champion in the 1,500m, not only improved his own European record for the distance in 3 min 27 sec 14 at the Diamond League meeting in Chorzow (Poland) on Sunday, but he also got closer to his goal of breaking the record of Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj.
Threatened Hicham El Guerrouj’s world record (3 min 26 sec 00)? On Sunday, Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen signed the fourth best performance in history over the distance (3 min 27 sec 14). He is therefore on the verge of breaking the 25-year-old record of the Moroccan athlete. A dream he has been pursuing for a few years. Before him, Bernard Lagat (3 min 26 sec 34) and Asbel Kiprop (3 min 26 sec 69) had tried to take up the challenge. Without success. Hicham remains undefeated.
The Moroccan had set this world record in the 1500 meters on July 14, 1998 at the Golden Gala. At the time, he had beaten the record of Algerian athlete Nourredine Morceli set in 1995, with a time of 3 min 27 sec 37.
