Northern Morocco Turns Green After Heavy Winter Rains

The depressions that struck the Kingdom in recent weeks caused the deaths of four people and displaced 188 000 residents in the provinces of Kénitra, Larache, Sidi Kacem and Sidi Slimane. Although 110 000 hectares were flooded, these intense rainfalls brought an end to a prolonged period of drought, triggering a radical transformation of the landscape.

Data from the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite reveal a striking contrast between February 2025 and February 2026. Where vegetation was once sparse and the soil arid, images captured on 20 February 2026 now show abundant vegetation across the entire northeastern part of the country after two months of heavy winter rains.

In terms of water resources, supplies reached 11,8 billion cubic meters, representing a spectacular 155 % increase compared with the previous year. This recovery has enabled dams to reach a filling rate of 70,7 % of their total capacity, considerably improving conditions for agriculture and water supply security.
