Morocco records a record filling of its dams

Morocco’s water reserves show a strong increase, reaching a national stock of 9,261 million cubic meters as of January 28, 2026. With an overall fill rate of 55.2%, the country has recorded a gain of 212 million m³ in just twenty-four hours, almost doubling its reserves compared to the same period last year.

This upward trend is confirmed in the long term, with an increase in reserves of nearly 2.68 billion m³ since the end of 2025. Year-on-year, the contrast is striking: while reserves were capped at 4.6 billion m³ in January 2025 with a rate of 27.6%, they are now up nearly 99%. This overall improvement is largely due to the performance of the major dams, led by the Al Wahda dam, whose reserves have jumped by 112 million m³ in one day to reach 74% of its capacity.

Several other strategic infrastructures are also contributing to this recovery. The Idriss Iᵉʳ dam has seen its volume reach 657 million m³, while Bin El Ouidane and Dar Khrofa show fill rates of 37% and 40% respectively. The Ahmed El Hanssali dam is following a similar trajectory by crossing the 400 million m³ mark. At the same time, some dams maintain saturation levels, such as Oued El Makhazine, which remains completely full, or Sidi Med Ben Abdellah, which is close to its maximum capacity despite slight management adjustments.

Although some sites like Al Massira still show modest levels with a rate of 13%, the entire network is benefiting from a positive trend. Inflows should continue to grow due to persistent rainfall forecast in several regions of the Kingdom. This sustained rainfall suggests an accelerated recharge of the most responsive basins, particularly for dams with significant storage capacity still available.
