Tourism: Morocco officially becomes the new global giant (UN figures)

Morocco is emerging as one of the world’s most successful tourist destinations of 2025 according to the latest barometer from the UN Tourism agency published on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. The Kingdom has recorded double-digit growth in its international tourist arrivals, far exceeding the global average and consolidating its position as a leader in Africa.

The annual data reveals that international tourist arrivals in Morocco have soared by 14% over the entire 2025 fiscal year. This momentum is even more pronounced in terms of international tourism receipts, which show an exceptional increase of 19% calculated in local currency. This performance places the country among the leading global destinations that have experienced the strongest growth, alongside Brazil and Egypt.

At the regional level, Africa saw its arrivals increase by 8% in 2025, a growth driven primarily by North Africa, which posted an 11% increase. The Middle East also continues to stand out with results 39% higher than pre-pandemic levels, while Europe remains the world’s leading receiving region with 793 million visitors, an increase of 4% compared to the previous year.

Overall, international tourism has regained its historic growth trends with 1.52 billion arrivals recorded worldwide in 2025, 60 million more than in 2024. The export revenues generated by the sector have reached the record figure of $2.2 trillion. This recovery has been supported by increased air connectivity, visa facilitation, and robust demand in major source markets such as France and the United States.

Prospects for 2026 anticipate a continuation of growth between 3% and 4%. Experts, however, point out that the sector will have to contend with persistent challenges, notably high inflation in tourism services and uncertainties related to global geopolitical tensions. Demand is expected to remain oriented towards the search for good value for money, while major international events, such as the FIFA World Cup, should stimulate traveler flows.
