Netflix’s "Lonely Planet" Faces Backlash: Viewers Criticize Lack of Chemistry in Morocco-Set Romance

The romantic film "Lonely Planet", filmed in Morocco and starring American actress Laura Dern, 57, and Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, 34, was not very well received by Netflix viewers.
On X (formerly Twitter), many Netflix viewers are making negative comments about "Lonely Planet". "Damn, there’s something missing in this film #LonelyPlanet! Where’s the spark!? Don’t they do chemistry tests with the actors anymore?!" complains an Internet user. "What I enjoyed the most in Lonely Planet was when the movie was over. My God, it stank," a second Internet user jokes. Another Internet user drives the point home: "Eek, I watched The Lonely Planet and only because it was filmed in Marrakech, Morocco. But don’t bother... it’s horrible."
"Not only was the chemistry between Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern unconvincing, forced and clumsy, but Lonely Planet is probably the most insignificant romantic drama Netflix has ever produced; with the most superficial epiphany ever written," comments another.
The comments keep coming. "Lonely Planet crashed spectacularly, as if there wasn’t a single moment in the film where I felt anything," rages an Internet user in anger. "What a painful waste of a stunning cast, my God. Wouldn’t they have been able to say no?" completes another. "I watched the movie Lonely Planet on Netflix last night and my God! I haven’t watched a bad movie in a long time. I forgot how bad movies can be. From the acting, the dialogue, the script and Liam Hemsworth’s stupid career. Oh my God, it’s horrible! How were they allowed to do this?"
The two Hollywood actors Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth are the stars of the romantic film "Loney Planet". The first is the cult actress of "Jurassic Park", Oscar-winning for her work in "Marriage Story". In 2020, she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the film Marriage Story by Noah Baumbach. The second is known for his role in the Hunger Games quadrilogy. In 2020, he participated in the film "Arkansas" and the series "Most Dangerous Game". The film follows Dern in the role of a lonely novelist who arrives at a prestigious writers’ retreat in Morocco. Instead of finding a cure for her writer’s block, she unexpectedly falls in love with a young man.
Other Netflix viewers, however, really enjoyed "Lonely Planet". "A very nice Saturday morning program," rejoices a viewer. "#LonelyPlanet on #Netflix with Laura Dern and Liam Hensworth. It’s worth a look," advises another. "I see negative reviews, but I love this movie. It’s a movie that builds up slowly," comments a third viewer. A fourth viewer adds: "Oh my God! Go see #LonelyPlanet. Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth have that spark to spare. The landscapes of Morocco are breathtaking. It’s a really beautifully written story."
