Netflix's Biblical Drama 'Marie' Draws Mixed Reactions Despite High Viewership

Internet users are not kind to the film Marie, filmed in Chefchaouen (Morocco), which is nevertheless a hit on Netflix in recent days.

Unveiled on December 6, Marie, a feature film, a free adaptation of the Bible, which features as main heroes, Mary and Joseph the parents of Jesus, played by Noa Cohen and Ido Tako, occupies the second position in the ranking of the most watched films on Netflix in France. According to the Tudum site, it occupies the fourth position of the week with 11.4 million views. But the long film is less appreciated by the AlloCiné internet users. The film has been given an average rating of 2.7 out of 5 (on 70 ratings recorded).

"A few oddities, sequence shots that should never have been there, not always very well played but for once that Netflix is making an effort to offer the biblical universe on its platform, we’re not going to complain about this pleasure," comments Spiculus75004 who gives it an average rating of 4 out of 5. "A good thing that Netflix offers content that speaks to the Christian community, but it is globally a failure if we refer to the texts although the birth and childhood of the virgin is very little or not at all addressed it is therefore an enormous risk taken by the director [...]," notes Esteban De jesus (2.5 out of 5).

"What a disappointment! What disappointments!, exclaims Christophe Laruelle (1 out of 5). What good can be found in this film? I was hoping for a minimum of reality based on a few facts or at least a tale drawn from the legend of the Bible, otherwise made as a journey into the imaginary. Nothing of all that, actors, direction, etc. Nothing is worth remembering and I wonder why some highly competent and aging actors agreed to shoot this." Xavier Van Dieren gives the worst rating (0.5 out of 5): "I was looking forward to this movie, but... Poorly played, poorly dubbed, pompous, without any finesse... It looks like a very average 70s movie..."

Marie is now exclusively available on Netflix.
