Nayef Aguerd risks his place in the Morocco national team

Olympique de Marseille and Al-Sadd are moving closer to an agreement for the transfer of Nayef Aguerd. The Moroccan defender must still accept the Qatari club’s offer.

According to Foot Mercato, the deal would take the form of a paid loan worth 4 million euros, accompanied by an automatic purchase option estimated at 11 million euros.

Marseille would thus recover the 15 million euros demanded for a player who arrived only a year earlier. For Aguerd, however, the decision is not limited to the proposed contract or the amount of the deal.

At 30, the Moroccan international would leave Ligue 1 and a club competing in European competitions to join a less competitive Qatari league. This choice could carry weight when the Moroccan coach assesses the form and level of his defenders.

A regular starter is never permanently established

With 64 caps, Nayef Aguerd remains one of the most experienced players in the Morocco national team. His status is based notably on his international experience, his ability to build from the back and the performances he produced over several seasons in Europe’s major leagues.

A move to Al-Sadd would not automatically mean the end of that status. Players playing in the Gulf countries continue to be regularly called up for the Atlas Lions.

The risk lies elsewhere. By leaving Marseille, Aguerd would play each week in a less intense environment and receive more limited sporting exposure. At the same time, several Moroccan defenders are continuing their development in European leagues and can use every international break to close the gap.

Aguerd’s place will therefore depend not only on the name of his next club. His playing time, physical condition and performances with Al-Sadd will remain decisive.

But at this stage of his career, leaving European football represents a significant turning point. The defender could gain stability and become a central player in the Qatari project, while accepting that his position in the national team would be subject to greater scrutiny.

The transfer has not yet been completed and Aguerd still has the final say. His choice could offer him a lucrative contract and a major role at Al-Sadd. It would nevertheless have sporting consequences: by moving to Qatar, the Moroccan would also be putting part of his status with the Atlas Lions on the line.
