National Geographic Traveller Editors Name Morocco Their Top Destination for 2026
Morocco wins the British editorial team’s award at the National Geographic Traveller Reader Awards 2026. It narrowly beats Japan in this category, which is separate from the readers’ vote.

The rankings, published on 30 September by National Geographic Traveller UK, put Morocco at the top of the editors’ picks. Japan and Sri Lanka complete the podium. The magazine describes the result between the top two as close.

To explain their preference, the editors highlight Morocco’s proximity to the United Kingdom: less than four hours by plane can be enough to change the scenery. Marrakech is among the experiences mentioned, but their selection goes beyond the medinas.
From the desert to surf beaches
A night under the stars in the Sahara, the waves at Taghazout and Tamraght, then the trails of the Atlas: this diversity is central to the magazine’s choice.
In the publisher’s announcement, Lorna Parkes, editorial director, also cites new air routes and affordable prices among the advantages that drew attention to Morocco.
Readers, meanwhile, chose Italy as their favourite destination. Nearly 4,000 respondents took part across the 15 categories in the public vote; Morocco’s award comes from a separate selection by the editorial team.
