Muslim Students in Spain Transfer Schools After Hijab Ban
Thursday 10 March 2022, by
Muslim girls who were prohibited from wearing the hijab in a school in Malaga, southern Spain, will be transferred to other public schools. This is the solution proposed by the Delegation of Education and accepted by their parents.
The parents met with the Delegation of Education on Wednesday, which explained to them that the center has only complied with its internal regulations that prohibit the wearing of the veil. The most important thing was "to find a solution for the girls" who have missed classes and exams in recent weeks, said the president of the Moroccan Association for the Integration of Immigrants, Ahmed Khalifa, who attended the meeting.

"While it is true that the internal regulations prohibit the wearing of the veil, there is a higher law, the Constitution, which enshrines religious freedom as a fundamental right," denounced Khalifa, who calls on the Ministry of Education to ensure the legality of internal rules in schools. The Delegation of Education proposed that the girls change schools, which the parents accepted, according to Diario Sur.

The girls, aged 14 and 12, were denied access to the classroom because they wore the veil. For several days, they spent the whole day in a waiting room at the school. For Ahmed Khalifa, this is an "Islamophobic" act. For its part, the center issued a statement in which it specified that it has only applied the internal regulations whose respect "falls on the entire educational community and the management of the center".
