MRE Car Import Morocco: Lower Customs Duties Strategy

Moroccans residing abroad who return permanently to Morocco can benefit from a little-known customs advantage for their car. The vehicle can be considered three years older for calculating its taxable value, but this facility remains strictly regulated.

MREs making a permanent return to Morocco can benefit from a special mechanism when clearing their vehicle through customs. In its guide for Moroccans worldwide, the Customs Administration mentions a three-year "aging" applied to the imported vehicle.

This system allows for an additional three-year deduction to determine its taxable value. In other words, the age used to calculate duties and taxes may differ from the vehicle’s actual age.

A recent car can be treated as an older one

Customs provides a concrete example: a vehicle put into circulation just one month ago can be considered, for calculating duties and taxes to be paid, as a vehicle over three years old.

This advantage concerns MREs returning permanently to Morocco with an imported vehicle. It is not a total exemption, but a more favorable calculation method for the vehicle’s taxable value.

To benefit from it, the MRE concerned must submit their file to the customs service of their residence in Morocco. Several documents are required: vehicle identification certificate, temporary admission document issued by customs, certificate of change of residence dated less than six months ago, vehicle ownership certificate, copy of national identity card, and original purchase invoice for vehicles three months old or less.

An advantage granted only once

The measure does not apply to all vehicles. The guide specifies that it is granted only for passenger motor vehicles. It is also limited to one vehicle per person and can only be used once in a lifetime.

This point is important for MREs planning a permanent return. The choice of vehicle to import to Morocco can therefore have direct consequences on the amount to pay when clearing customs.
