MRE: Beware, your savings can be seized
The Spanish authorities are reminding travelers, particularly Moroccans residing abroad (MRE), crossing the border of Ceuta of the obligation to declare any amount exceeding 10,000 euros. Failure to declare at the Tarajal post can result in immediate confiscation of funds and heavy fines.
The Guardia Civil has intensified its communication on social networks to raise awareness among users transiting through the Tarajal border post. This vigilance measure applies to all people crossing the border, whether they are heading to Morocco or returning to Ceuta after a stay.
According to the legislation in force, any passenger transporting 10,000 euros or more, or the equivalent in foreign currency such as the Moroccan dirham, must make a prior declaration. This formality is carried out using the "S1" form, a mandatory legal document whose registration is completely free.
The authorities specify that the transport of such sums is not prohibited in itself. However, the agents in charge of financial control are authorized to seize the entire funds if the legal threshold is exceeded without declaration. This procedure can also lead to financial penalties against offenders.
These reinforced controls are part of the measures adopted to fight against money laundering and financial crimes. The Guardia Civil therefore urges travelers, especially during periods of high traffic, to comply with this rule to avoid any administrative complications or loss of capital.
