Ceuta: Moroccan Expat Sentenced for 50-Euro Bribery Attempt

The incident dates back to August 25, 2024. During a routine inspection, the officer informed the driver, L.E.Y., that his goods—oil, cheese, and olives—did not comply with health regulations and could not enter Ceuta. It was at that point that the defendant made the fatal gesture: “He handed him a 50-euro bill, in a clear attempt to bribe him so that he would allow him to enter,” the court document states.

The defendant admitted the facts, explaining that he had acted under the conviction that this behavior was lawful, believing it to be common practice during border crossings. The court accepted the argument of an “avoidable mistake of prohibition,” meaning that the individual mistakenly believed he was acting legally, while stressing that he should have informed himself about the regulations in force on the Spanish side, El Faro de Ceuta reports.

The sentence was handed down:

• 9 months in prison and a fine of 450 euros.

• Confiscation of the 50 euros used in the attempted bribery.

• A 2-year suspended sentence, provided he commits no offense and complies with a ban on residing in Ceuta during that period.
