Morocco Zoo Takes Action to Protect Animals from Intense Heat Wave

The Rabat Zoological Garden, considered one of the major attractions of Morocco’s cultural and tourist landscape, has implemented a series of measures to ensure the well-being of its animals suffering from the heat wave.
The intense heat that is hitting Morocco is making the animals in the zoos suffer. Faced with this situation, the technical teams of the Rabat National Zoological Garden, which has around 2,000 animals from nearly 190 species and is known for its role in the conservation of rare and endangered fauna, especially the Atlas lions, "are implementing a series of measures to mitigate the impact of the heat wave on the animals," says Saad Azizi, head of veterinary and zoological services, to Africanews. According to his explanations, these measures mainly concern mammals and birds. "They receive frozen meals and ice creams, taking into account the specific diet of each animal. But these foods are provided in limited quantities to avoid potential side effects of frozen foods," he adds.
The same techniques are used in almost all animal parks to cool the animals. "We use cooling techniques to take care of our animals. During the summer, when the heat is intense, we try as much as possible to provide them with ice blocks to cool the air, and we also shower some animals to protect them from the intense heat. Each animal has a natural habitat that suits it perfectly," explains Oualid Zekaki, a zoo keeper.
