Morocco Weighs Border Reopening as COVID-19 Situation Evolves, Government Says

The government will decide on the reopening of borders and the easing of restrictions, taking into account the epidemiological situation in the country and in the world, said government spokesman Mustapha Baitas.

When questioned about the reopening of borders, the minister said that this is "not an easy decision for the government to make," specifying that this option is based on a precise reading of national and international epidemiological indicators.

He added that "the coronavirus pandemic is a subject whose developments are difficult to predict, in the face of the emergence of new variants." "We hope that this wave that the world is going through will not last long and that its end will be imminent," he continued.

Regarding the fate of the tourism sector, which has been severely affected, Baitas reassured of the government’s support, which has put in place intervention mechanisms and devices. "The government and the supervisory authority continue the dialogue with all the players in the sector and that initiatives have been put in place to support professionals," he stressed.

The objective of all the measures taken by the government in the management of the health crisis is "first to protect the lives and health of Moroccans and then to support the economy," he argued.
