Morocco Water Highways: Marrakech Desalination Infrastructure

Designed by Moroccan engineers, this project worth 4.3 billion dirhams financed by the State inaugurates the "water highways" model. A network of steel pipes stretching nearly 185 kilometers now connects the coast to the ochre city. Water treated by OCP group facilities in Safi will transit through three major pumping stations before reaching the Ramram basin. This central reservoir of 10,000 cubic meters, located five kilometers north of the city, will receive volumes before their redistribution.

This technical infrastructure, nearly 98% complete, provides an immediate solution to a climate emergency situation. The Marrakech agglomeration is suffering the full brunt of drought periods, combined with strong demographic growth and tourism activity that is particularly demanding in resources. The new hydraulic corridor will deliver 100 million cubic meters of desalted seawater annually, in line with royal directives aimed at increasing the use of non-conventional resources to address the structural deficit.

On the ground, final distribution to users will be operated by the Regional Multi-Services Company of Marrakech-Safi. Its deputy general director, Adil Daoudi, clarifies that the objective of this development is to provide "an additional, sustainable and secure supply source". This reform of drinking water, electricity and sanitation management must make it possible to support the economic development of the region while strengthening its water security for the decades to come.
