Morocco’s Water and Electric Utility Hit by $50,000 Embezzlement Scandal

The regional office of the National Office of Electricity and Water (ONEE) in Oualidia was shaken by a case of fraud and embezzlement. An employee of the agency is suspected of having embezzled 500,000 dirhams, intended for the payment of invoices.
An audit mission, dispatched by the central administration, identified several fraudulent operations affecting the invoices of the service providers of the Oualidia agency, reports the site Kech24. A complaint was immediately filed with the public prosecutor.
The investigation commission found a shortfall of around 500,000 dirhams, which the main suspect, a young employee in his thirties, was depositing into his own account, the media indicates, stressing that an internal investigation is underway to determine the respective responsibilities.
Arrested last Thursday, the accused, prosecuted for fraud, embezzlement of public funds and breach of trust, was placed in custody, pending his appearance this Wednesday before the Attorney General at the Court of Appeal of El Jadida.
