Former Moroccan MP Sentenced to 9 Years for Corruption and Embezzlement

Prosecuted for corruption and embezzlement, a former parliamentarian was sentenced to 9 years in prison, accompanied by a fine of 500,000 dirhams and the confiscation of his assets. His accomplices were also sentenced to heavy prison terms and heavy fines.

It all started with a complaint from an association for the protection of public property that had denounced these acts of embezzlement of public funds with supporting evidence. This complaint had been preceded by a report from the General Inspectorate of the Ministry of the Interior which had exposed contradictions between the work carried out and the studies carried out, recalls Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.

At the end of the trial, the verdict was very harsh for the parliamentarian and former mayor and his accomplices. In addition to the 9 years of hard labor, he was fined a hefty 500,000 DH and the seizure of nearly 18 million DH.

Like the other accomplices, a contractor was sentenced to 8 years in prison, a fine of 80,000 dirhams and the confiscation of the sum of 8.6 dirhams. As for the director of a consulting firm (M. L.S) also involved in this case, he was sentenced to six years in prison, a fine of 100,000 dirhams and the confiscation of his assets estimated at several million dirhams.

As for the female architect (N.B), she was sentenced to 5 years in prison, a fine of 50,000 dirhams and the confiscation of the sum of 8.6 dirhams. The municipal engineer, the former mayor’s driver and the accountant, for their part, were respectively sentenced to 1, 3 and 4 years in prison, as well as fines ranging from 40,000 to 120,000 dirhams.
