Morocco Unveils Plans to Revamp Affordable Housing Programs

The Minister of National Land Use Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and City Policy, Nouzha Bouchareb, has lifted a corner of the veil on the revision of the contracting mechanisms related to social housing and that intended for the middle class.

The objective of the revision of the mechanisms is to facilitate the purchasing power of the beneficiaries by providing them with innovative financing solutions, capable of facilitating access to housing under simple conditions. The minister stated that the housing programs set up in 2008 in several regions of Morocco have made it possible to provide access to low-cost housing. This offer has benefited families living in slums, dilapidated buildings and with limited incomes. Moreover, it has favored the realization of 28,053 units until August 2020, said the Minister of Development during the session, notes La Map.

The adoption in 2010 of a social housing mechanism at 250,000 DH, in favor of families without housing, followed the program launched in 2008. This mechanism has allowed the realization of 496,603 units until the end of last August. Similarly, another program for the middle class was set up in 2013, however, the result was not as expected, said Nouzha Bouchareb, adding that the various housing programs have made it possible to reduce the recorded deficit from 2.1 million units to 400,000 currently. The minister also mentioned the delicate attention paid to rural areas with the mobilization of financial resources from the overall budget and the Habitat and Urban Integration Solidarity Fund.

Regarding the 250,000 DH housing offer, the minister stressed that 57,000 homes have been built in rural areas and 1,470 housing units at 140,000 DH, so far. Also, it should be noted that 9,686 rural families have benefited from the signing of 32 conventions, for a budget envelope of more than 280 MDH, with the participation of the ministry, at more than 120 million, specifies the same source.
