Morocco Unveils Massive Green Data Center to Boost Digital Sovereignty and African Tech Hub Ambitions

Morocco has announced its project to build a new public data center with a capacity of 500 megawatts, which will be fully powered by renewable energy. According to the Minister of Digital Transition, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, this initiative aims to strengthen the security and sovereignty of national data storage.
This orientation of Morocco reflects an international trend, where many states seek to ensure that their sensitive information is hosted and processed on their own territory. The Dakhla project is in addition to a first sovereign center inaugurated in January at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, which already offers cloud services to local entities.
The ambition goes beyond the national framework, aiming to position Morocco as a key player at the continental level. "Through this network of data centers, the kingdom is affirming not only its digital sovereignty, but also its ambition to become a regional digital hub at the service of Africa," the minister stressed.
This program is part of the country’s digital modernization strategy (2024-2026), with a budget of 11 billion dirhams (1.22 billion dollars). This investment plan also covers the development of artificial intelligence and the expansion of the national fiber optic network.
