Morocco Unveils High-Speed Rail Plan for 2030 World Cup Bid

Morocco is active in the co-organization of the football World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. It is preparing an ambitious mobility plan for express journeys between airports and stadiums.

In the perspective of co-organizing the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal, Morocco will implement an ambitious program to modernize its transport infrastructure. One of the priority objectives is to reduce the travel time between airports and stadiums to a maximum of twenty minutes, thanks to the commissioning of new generation trains.

This project is based on massive investments in the national rail network, explained Abdessamad Kayouh, Minister of Transport and Logistics, to the Qatari channel beIN Sports. Thanks to the integration of the latest technologies in rolling stock and the development of rail lines, the new high-speed lines will, for example, allow to connect Tangier to Marrakech in two hours and forty-five minutes, against seven hours currently. Morocco also plans to build a new rail line to connect Kenitra to Marrakech via Rabat, the large stadium of Benslimane as well as a specially designed station near the Mohammed V airport in Casablanca, currently undergoing modernization.

Morocco is also working on perfect coordination between the different modes of transport in order to ensure maximum fluidity for supporters, teams and official delegations. Express links between the main tourist hubs and the competition sites are also planned, in order to strengthen the kingdom’s ability to meet the logistical requirements of a large-scale event like the 2030 World Cup.
