Morocco Unveils $2.5 Billion Health Budget, Promises Major Pay Boost for Doctors

In the 2022 Finance Bill, the government has allocated a budget of 23.5 billion dirhams to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, including the revaluation of the medical profession.
During the discussions on the Finance Bill in the House of Representatives, the Delegate Minister in charge of the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, provided elements of response to the economic and social issues raised by the deputies.
Responding to a question on the revaluation of the medical profession, the minister indicated that "a doctor should not be a civil servant". For him, the issue of their salary is taken into account in the overall reform undertaken by the government. The forecasts for these health system actors even go beyond the expectations of the parliamentarians, who are demanding a salary increase, he assured.
In clear, in the new reform, the Moroccan doctor is paid per act and his income can go up to 100,000 dirhams per month. Once the reform is enacted, doctors will therefore see their income increase considerably and depend on their workload. A minimum threshold will be introduced to ensure a monthly income, the minister assures, while recalling that a doctor who opts for a six-month training abroad will not be paid during this entire period.
