Morocco Unveils Ambitious Plan to Expand High-Speed Rail Network by 1300 km

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Adeljalil, presented on Tuesday to the House of Advisors the progress of the actions taken by the National Railways Office (ONCF) to strengthen and modernize rail transport between the cities and airports of the kingdom.

Responding to a question from the Ittihad party group, Abdeljalil recalled that 38 ONCF trains provide daily connections from 5am to 11pm with a frequency of one train per hour between Rabat and Mohammed V International Airport and Casa-port station, which is connected to the national network.

The Office has adopted its development plan called "Railway Plan 2040" to extend the rail network and strengthen the connection between cities and airports, continued the Minister of Transport, announcing the construction, as part of this plan, of 1,300 km of new high-speed rail lines, as well as 3,800 km of new conventional rail lines to connect 43 cities instead of the current 23.

These works will make it possible to ensure the transport of 87% of the Moroccan population (compared to 51% currently), and to connect 12 ports (6 currently) and 15 international airports (only Mohammed V airport currently). The government member also indicated that the Mohammed V - Casablanca and Rabat-Salé airports will be connected to the national network as part of the high-speed train (TGV) project between Kenitra and Marrakech via Rabat and Casablanca.

The realization of these projects requires significant investments and synergy of actions from all stakeholders, insisted Abdeljalil, noting that the National Airports Office (ONDA) is working closely with local authorities to improve public transport services (buses, taxis and tourist transport vehicles) connecting airports and cities.
