Morocco Unveils $200 Million Tourism Sector Aid Package Amid Pandemic Recovery

The Ministry of Tourism has unveiled the distribution of the two billion allocated to support the tourism sector, which has been hit hard by the health crisis. Here are the details.

This is government support included in the emergency plan planned to support ailing tourism operators.

Thus, the government had decided to extend the payment of the monthly allowance of 2,000 dirhams during the first quarter of 2022 and to defer the social security contributions due for six months. To this are added three support schemes for the sector.

First, the State will work to upgrade tourist accommodation establishments, by granting them up to 10% of their turnover. The aim of this aid is to financially support tourist accommodation establishments wishing to prepare for a rapid resumption of activity following a return to normal operating conditions, we learn.

Secondly, a moratorium on bank loans is granted to classified travel agencies and restaurants and tourist transport companies (ETT). According to the ministry, this second measure aims to relieve the cash flow of tourism companies in difficulty in order to optimize the use of their liquidity. The aim is to achieve a rapid recovery of activity.

Thirdly, the State will cover the professional tax of tourist accommodation establishments. These are receivables relating to the professional tax, issued for the 2021 and 2022 tax years, unpaid and due. The objective is to support them during this sensitive phase and prepare them for the recovery, explains the document.
