Morocco’s Transport Minister Denies Highway Toll Increase Amid Economic Challenges

Faced with the growing controversy on social media, Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, spoke at the House of Representatives to respond to the alleged increase in toll rates.
The official stated that no increase in toll rates is currently planned on Moroccan highways, despite the initial plans of 2019. This decision not to raise tariffs takes into account the difficult economic context, marked in particular by the repercussions of the crisis in Ukraine and the drought affecting the country.
The Moroccan road network, rich in its 60,000 km including highways and roads of various categories, remains at the heart of government concerns, he said, highlighting the importance of this network in the development and connectivity of Morocco and recalling the recent update of the road map.
Finally, the minister insisted on the need to maintain a high level of quality on the highway network. He explained that the ongoing works are not intended to prepare for a tariff increase, but to ensure the safety and comfort of users. These maintenance operations are essential to preserve the efficiency of the network and support economic growth, without weighing on the wallets of citizens in these difficult times.
