Morocco Accelerates Major Highway Construction Projects, Minister Reports

Thursday 19 January 2023, by Armel

The execution of highway construction projects in Morocco is continuing and will accelerate this year, according to the Minister of Equipment, Nizar Baraka, who on Tuesday provided an update on the construction sites and their level of execution.

As part of strengthening the national road network, in order to reduce territorial disparities, the government has launched several road construction projects. Questioned in the House of Councillors on the various ongoing projects, the minister provided an update on the levels of execution.

In his presentation, the minister stated that all priority construction sites are accelerating for delivery as soon as possible. He cited, for example, the tripling of the Casablanca-Berrechid highway over a length of 20 km, that of the Casablanca bypass highway over 30 km, and Tit Mellil-Berrechid over 30 km. Ultimately, these projects will help reduce the pressure on the Casablanca-Rabat highway, while a continental highway between the two cities will be built over a length of 60 km.

Regarding the Nador West Med project, the ministry assured that it is doing everything to build the Guercif-Nador highway, 104 km long, stressing that tenders have been launched for the Guercif-Saka section over 36 km. The department has also launched the study for the construction of the El Hajeb-Rissani Express Road (405 km) and the execution of the 2nd phase of the study for the construction of the Marrakech-Fès-Meknès highway via Béni Mellal, 180 km long.

Regarding the projects in the Agadir region, Baraka said that the construction site for the northeast bypass of Greater Agadir is making "significant progress". These include the reinforcement of the N11 national road connecting the free zone and the northeast road (40 km) and the upgrading of the urban expressway in Agadir, including the construction of underpasses over a length of 20 km. These projects will help improve road safety indicators and facilitate the connection to the Agadir-Marrakech highway, at an estimated total cost of 1.4 billion dirhams, the minister stressed.
