Moroccan Lawmaker Convicted for Highway Toll Evasion, Caught on Camera

A businessman, parliamentarian and also president of the Taza City Council was convicted in absentia for violating the toll on the highway.
Surveillance camera footage revealed that a member of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) forced his way through the highway toll in Taza without paying the toll fees. After receiving a report from the Moroccan Motorways Company, the public prosecutor decided to prosecute him, reports the Arabic-language daily Al Akhbar. Another report will be drawn up by the gendarmerie services after he refused to be questioned about the offense.
An investigation was opened and entrusted to a team from the Royal Gendarmerie. The latter went to a tourist complex belonging to the accused to take his statement. He was not on site. According to one of his employees, the elected official was on a parliamentary mission in Rabat. Informed of the visit of the gendarmes, he assured that he would go to the gendarmerie as soon as possible to answer their questions, which he did not do.
Absent from his trial, the accused was fined twice. The court simply took the two reports into account.
