Morocco's Tourism Surges: 11 Million Visitors in 2022, Outpacing Global Recovery Rates

The tourism sector in Morocco showed a certain resilience in 2022, with a total of 11 million visitors, representing a 84% recovery compared to 2019, before the crisis, according to Fatim-Zahra Ammor, the Minister of Tourism.

These figures exceed the global average recovery rate for the sector, which is around 63%. Tourism revenues also peaked, reaching nearly 94 billion dirhams, an increase of 19% compared to 2019.

Since the beginning of 2023, the dynamism of Moroccan tourism has only been on the rise. Between January and May, Morocco welcomed 5.1 million tourists, an increase of 20% compared to the same period in 2019. This influx generated around 41 billion dirhams in revenue, up 42% compared to the same period in 2019.

The minister also highlighted significant progress in terms of tourism promotion and engineering in 2022 and 2023. The "Morocco, Land of Light" campaign was launched, targeting 20 strategic markets, in addition to the conclusion of partnerships with digital travel agencies, aimed at attracting an additional 2.8 million tourists during the summer of 2023.

Finally, the volume of tourism investments reached 8.9 billion dirhams in 2022, illustrating the confidence of international players in the Moroccan destination. This momentum, according to the minister, was accompanied by the opening of 109 new hotel units, adding nearly 9,541 beds to the total accommodation offer. Promotion and investment remain the two main drivers of the 2023-2026 roadmap for tourism, with several projects launched to improve the tourism offer and services.
