Morocco Tightens Gun Control Laws with New Firearms Legislation

Morocco has decided to modernize its legal arsenal related to weapons. A bill to this effect was adopted this week by parliament.
This is bill no. 86-21 relating to firearms, their parts, components, elements, accessories and ammunition, which was unanimously voted by the deputies. This new text provides for the submission of the possession, trade, import and export operations of firearms to specific authorizations.
The objective is to provide Morocco with a legal framework that is in line with the various technological and technical changes in this field, said Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit, stressing that the current legal framework is no longer adapted to the current situation, not providing for coercive penalties, and thus becoming obsolete in the vast majority of its provisions.
The new text aims to specify the scope of application of the draft law by subjecting to its articles hunting and shooting weapons, personal protection handguns, traditional weapons, air-powered weapons, special weapons marking the start of sports competitions, as well as parts of said weapons, their components, elements, accessories and ammunition, he specified.
From now on, any person who imports or possesses firearms made entirely or partially of polymer, those printed in 3D and deactivated weapons, faces a prison sentence of one month to 20 years and a fine of 10,000 DH to 2 million DH.
