Morocco Tightens Airport Customs: New 2,000 Dirham Limit on Duty-Free Goods

The Moroccan customs will now tax objects, goods and gifts worth more than 2,000 dirhams upon entry and exit of airports as part of new restrictive measures.
"As a visitor traveling to Morocco, you are authorized to bring back from abroad, without customs formalities or payment of import duties and taxes, limited gifts and without commercial character up to a total value of 2,000 dirhams," specifies the customs in a note quoted by L’Économiste. The merchandise in question must also be declared.
All information on this new regulation and the system put in place for its strict application has been posted in the international airports of the kingdom. It is for example indicated that a traveler "has the right to carry only one 150 ml perfume and one 250 ml toilet water". Also, he will now only be entitled to one pack of cigarettes.
"Personal medication is in principle admitted duty-free (exemption) on import. But subject to producing the relevant medical documents," it is specified. Furthermore, the limit for importing dirhams is set at 2,000 dirhams. The traveler who imports beyond the "authorized threshold" commits a "foreign exchange offense punishable by sanctions," warns customs.
