Morocco: the expected shock at the pump ultimately did not happen

The prices displayed at service stations remained unchanged on Saturday, August 1, despite forecasts of a significant increase at the beginning of the month.

The price of diesel was expected to rise by around two dirhams per liter, according to industry sources. Gasoline was also expected to see a comparable increase, which would have pushed both fuels above 15 dirhams at many stations.

This prospect had caused considerable concern among motorists. Lines were reported outside several stations on Friday evening, with some drivers seeking to fill their tanks before the new prices took effect.

The prices ultimately remain unchanged

Yet the increase never appeared on the signs. Checks carried out at stations on Saturday confirmed that the old prices remained in place.

An industry source confirmed that the planned increase was not implemented. Unofficial sources in the sector cited a postponement with no new date, “due to the situation in the North.”

For now, no official statement from the distribution companies has clarified the reasons for this change or announced the date on which the increase might be reinstated.

The relief may therefore be only temporary. Distributors usually revise their prices twice a month, depending in particular on international prices, import costs and changes in the exchange rate.

On July 16, diesel had already increased by 69 centimes to reach approximately 13.30 dirhams per liter. Gasoline had risen by 39 centimes, to nearly 14.24 dirhams, with differences depending on the brands and cities.
