Fuel Prices Surge in Morocco, Hitting Motorists’ Wallets

In Morocco, motorists are facing an increase in fuel prices at the beginning of February.
A bad surprise awaits Moroccan motorists at the pump. Since Saturday, the price of a liter of diesel has increased by 20 cents to reach 11.67 dirhams, while that of gasoline has increased by 16 cents per liter, reaching 13.53 dirhams, according to the National Federation of Owners, Merchants and Managers of Service Stations in Morocco (FNPCGS), reports Le360. These increases will be more significant in service stations in certain cities of the kingdom due to the cost of transportation and distance.
The market was characterized, during the third quarter of 2024, by a downward trend in these three variables for both fuels (diesel and gasoline), with distinct levels of variation, noted the Competition Council in its latest quarterly report, focused in particular on the analysis of the correlation between the variation in international quotations, purchase costs and selling prices at the national level. The evolution of pump prices, particularly for diesel, does not, however, reflect the reality of quotations on the international market. "Operators have passed on the full extent of the decreases in purchase costs to their selling prices for gasoline. However, for diesel, the decrease in selling prices was 27 cents per liter lower compared to the decrease in purchase costs and international quotations," it is specified.
