Morocco Tackles 7,000 Tons of Annual Hospital Waste with New Management Plan

In Morocco, 7,000 tons of hospital waste are discharged each year. The government claims to have taken a series of measures to ensure their management and, above all, their treatment is effective.
Speaking during oral questions in parliament, the Minister of Health, Khaled Ait Taleb, indicated that this quantity of special waste is stored annually by establishments under the health sector, both public and private, as well as various medical analysis laboratories.
According to the breakdown, 3,500 tons are produced in public hospitals, 800 tons in primary health care facilities and 2,000 tons at private health facilities, the minister specified.
As for the management and treatment of this medical waste, the minister said that 21 waste shredding and treatment devices have been acquired since 2002, while the University Hospital Centers of Marrakech and Fez have been equipped with 3 waste treatment devices.
In addition, other measures have been taken in parallel, namely the publication of ministerial circulars on the subject as well as two scientific guides on the management of medical waste, in addition to the adoption of the delegated management mode for this waste, he noted.
